New Topic, Week of March 8 - March 14

(Once again, since last week's was late, this one will run until next Monday; we'll catch up over Spring Break, when there will be no topic.)

Since we've been speaking of paying attention, and noticing what is around you, it seems reasonable to discuss the biggest single source of distraction in most of your lives: cellphones. Specifically, text messages.

Read this article.

Now discuss.
How much does your cellphone, your use of text messages, cost you? What does it cost you other than money? What do you think cellphones and text messages will do to society in the long term, both positive and negative? Do you think cellphones have had an impact on your ability to communicate face to face, or in writing, as the article suggests?

If you don't have a cellphone, how much do you think you are handicapped in today's society because of that? What are you missing out on?

Finally: argue for or against SHHS's policy banning cellphones during class hours.

I am agains the cell phone policy at the high school it is really rediculous come on you cant talk on your cell phone when your walking down the hall that is stupid. I think that we should be able to text in class as long as the teachers are done with there lessons. To me I think that the school just wants to have control over its students, I think we can make our own dissisions
